Here comes the piano man

SINGAPORE: You can forgive singer-pianist Peter Cincotti for sounding a little blah at the moment.

“I’m sorry, I’m just tired, and I have a cold. I need sleep so I can be fresh in Singapore!” he apologised over the phone from his home in New York City.

Cincotti will be in town performing at the Sun Festival on Oct 21.

A prospect he said he’s looking forward to. “I was in Singapore once before, very briefly, years ago. And although this time the trip is just as brief, hopefully I can see more of the city.”

Born in 1983, Cincotti started playing piano — albeit a toy one — at the age of three.

While still in school he started performing in bars around New York.

Then, the 23-year-old singer-songwriter-pianist burst onto the music scene with a debut album that led him to become the youngest musician ever to claim the top spot on the Billboard jazz charts.

His style of playing has also been compared to another New York musical giant — Billy Joel, particularly on his latest album, East of Angel Town, a collection of original material.

But Cincotti brushes these accolades aside.

“I don’t think about (things like that)! All the stuff that comes out as a result of playing music is ancillary. I feel like everybody needs a reference point and... their comparisons are flattering and complimentary, but I’m here to play music, nothing else,” he stated. “Playing live is where its at for me.”

Playing live also provides a lot of entertaining moments — some of which Cincotti admitted he won’t try very hard to recall.

“One time, one of the fans knocked down a security guard. She was trying to get backstage and all of a sudden she just tackled the security guard. It was a woman who took down a male security guard. That was entertaining!”

Still, Cincotti said he’s grateful for where he is right now. “The best thing is to be able to do this and make a living at it. So many talented people don’t have a chance to do it. You have to be at the right place at the right time. So I’m lucky I have the chance to do this.”

Peter Cincotti performs Oct 21, 7.30pm at the Esplanade Concert Hall. Tickets from $48 to $128. You can get up close and personal with Peter at the VIP Hospitality Tent (The Sun Tent @ Esplanade Park). VIP passes at $88. All available from Sistic. East of Angel Town out now at all CD stores.TODAY/ra
