SINGAPORE: What’s with Thomas Ong and wild flowers?

The Singapore actor made his acting debut in 1996’s “Wild Orchids” starring opposite Fann Wong and come 2009, he will make his theatre debut with the musical “Wild Wild Rose”.

Described as “one of the glitziest cabaret affairs of the year”, “Wild Wild Rose”, a collaboration between MediaCorp VizPro and Hong Kong Spring-Time Stage Productions, is adapted from the black and white classic of the same name.

The 1960 movie, which tells the tale of seduction, love and betrayal between a sultry singer and a mediocre musician, has garnered laurels worldwide.

Staying true to the original plot and featuring widely popular songs from the movie such as “Carmen” and “Madame Butterfly”, “Wild Wild Rose” offers audiences a glimpse into the nightclub entertainment scene – the glitz and glamour, as well as the sorrow.

Ong, 39, will put on his dancing shoes and strut his stuff alongside veteran Hong Kong theatre actress Perry Chiu in this Chinese musical.

Ong remains highly popular in Singapore despite leaving the bright lights of showbiz to start his own company dealing in corporate gifts several years ago. He has starred in several Chinese TV dramas since his return, most recently playing a plastic surgeon in hit series “Perfect Cut”.

Chiu who was nominated twice for the Hong Kong Theatre Award’s Best Actress Award with her performances in “The Dream of a Young Girl” and “Butterflies are Free”, has also starred in movies and television drama serials.

“Wild Wild Rose” will play at the Victoria Theatre from January 1 to 4 next year. Tickets are available from S$38-S$78 at all SISTIC outlets.
