MUMBAI - Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan's latest film has been one of the studio's best-ever performers, it said Tuesday, despite fears raised by the economic downturn and Mumbai attacks.
"Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi" (Match Made In Heaven), which was released on Friday, grossed around 12.5 million dollars worldwide in its opening weekend, Yash Raj Films said in a statement.
The film, about the transformation of a soberly dressed middle-aged man who falls in love with a fun-loving younger woman, took one million dollars in the Middle East, a big market for Bollywood.
That could make it the company's biggest-selling film in the region, beating its 2006 action thriller "Dhoom 2", which took 1.86 million dollars in its entire run."
'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' has been appreciated tremendously by audiences across the board and the film's performance promises to continue in the same vein moving forward," Yash Raj Films said.
Leading trade analyst Komal Nahta predicted last week that the film was a "sureshot formula that is bound to find an instant connection with the masses".
