SINGAPORE : He's only 21 years old, and turned pro only last year with the release of his debut album "Mystery". Yet Taiwanese newcomer Yoga Lin is pulling off sell-out concerts in Taiwan and Hong Kong, and still winning fans and critics with his strong stage presence. Singapore will get a taste of this when Lin brings his gig to the Indoor Stadium on Friday 20 February.
Lin made his entrance to stardom by winning the "One Million Star (Season 1)" competition, a popular reality TV singing contest in Taiwan. He was dubbed the "Magician of Music", when he impressed the judges with his distinctively dreamy vocals and the ability to infuse his own vibes into songs.
While the Singapore concert is expected to be a lavish affair, complete with elaborate costumes and spectacular stage and lighting effects, a major draw will be the highly-anticipated collaboration with popular Taiwanese female trio S.H.E., who are confirmed guests at the concert.
This will be the first time both parties are performing onstage together and Lin is definitely nervous.
"They (S.H.E) are fun and lively on stage but I'm not a lively person, so I worry about not being able to get into the act with them. I'll probably just stand there and gawk..." said Lin who was in town on Monday to promote his forthcoming concert.
"But I'll remember the moment - my awkward first collaboration with S.H.E on the 21st year of my life," mused the visibly nervous singer when asked about the all-girl band.
Also on hand at the news conference was Singapore singer Olivia Ong, whose voice was behind the theme song of popular local drama "Little Nyonya". She will be a guest performer at the concert, sharing a duet with Lin.
The Singapore leg is the second and last stop of Yoga Lin’s "Trick Concert" tour, and the music-loving singer wants to relish the finale as much as his fans.
"It's great to be working with all the fine musicians at the concert, and I treasure this opportunity. I look forward to jamming with the band, and interacting with the audience through my music," said an earnest Lin.
Despite his obvious desire to focus on singing, Lin is set to also work on dancing.
"Dancing adds colour and livens up a show," said Lin who will reprise for fans at the Singapore outing, the song and dance segment that was staged in his previous concerts.
"I had apprehensions when the idea for a concert was mooted, and I wondered if I could do it. So I was determined to put together a strong show and the content had to be fun and interesting."
What that means is a slate of songs handpicked by Lin for the Singapore concert. Apart from tunes from his own album, Lin is including a couple of covers of songs that he's particularly fond of.
Fans can also expect an earful of chart-busting tunes from the late 80s and early 90s in a tribute to singers such as Aaron Kwok and group Little Tigers, whose music Lin grew up listening to. Listen out too for Yoga-nesque renditions of some English numbers. - CNA
Yoga Lin performs for one night only at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on February 20 at 8pm.
