SINGAPORE: When the Pussycat Dolls first performed in Singapore at the MTV Asia Awards in 2004, they were just starting out on a journey that would take them to infinity — and beyond. Or, at least, circumnavigate the globe a couple of times.
“One of our biggest gigs in the very beginning of our career was in Singapore for the MTV Asia Awards,” said Pussycat Doll Kimberly Wyatt (picture, second from left).
“It was when we still had 12 girls in the group. We didn’t have any of our own original material. We performed Big Spender and Fever. There such a huge crowd and everybody loved it.
“It kind of marked the beginning of our professional careers as Pussycat Dolls,” she told TODAY over the phone from Melbourne, Australia, where the Dolls were midway through their Australian leg of the World Domination Tour.
The tour, which started in January, wends its way to Singapore next week, less than a year since the Dolls strutted their stuff at Singfest last year.
“When I think of Singapore I think of cleanliness! I do! It’s a very clean city,” she said. “When we come this time, we’re pretty much in-and-out. But we have had time in the past to go shopping and walk around a little bit. I remember walking down the street and someone was offering free hugs!”
Right now, the Dolls are approaching the end of their tour, but they’re still enjoying every minute of it. “The tour has been incredible, we’ve been getting such an amazing response from every venue we’ve played in,” said the 27-year-old blonde.
The biggest challenge, said Wyatt, is physical. “It’s really to keep my body going. With all the travelling and jet lag, and not knowing where you are or what time of day it is — it’s really tough on your body. Doing an hour and half of straight cardio in high heels every night!
“Our show is physically demanding. There’s no shortcut — you just have to go for it. So it’s just being prepared mentally and physically for every show. We’ve gone on for long enough now to be aware of what’s going on and what’s happening, but it’s still really tough.”
To cope, Wyatt said she tries to relax as much as possible.
“I spend my days mostly relaxing so that I’m ready to do the show. I have to have my notebook and laptop with me because I love to write. I have my own website, beautifulmovements.com, and I do a dance blog for dancespirit.com. So I have to have my notebook for when inspiration strikes.
“I write down memories, any inspiration. I think my purpose in life is turn negative experiences into positive ones, and to just infiltrate positivity and inspiration into all my fans around the world.”
So, just what can we expect this time round? "An explosive performance by hot girls in hot costumes who love to sing and dance and put on a good show. So expect to be entertained!" said Wyatt.
And we had to ask — are there any catfights within the pussycats?
“I think we’ve become a close knit family. We understand our mood swings,” she said. “But we’re women, so at least one time a month we’ll have a bit of moodiness, but we know how to give each other space!”
