SINGAPORE : MediaCorp artistes Kym Ng and Quan Yifeng are on a mission to save our taste buds and more importantly, the livelihood of flailing food stallholders around Singapore.
In fact, this is the second time that two popular TV hosts are taking on this life-changing mission.
Not because they failed the first time round, but for exactly the opposite reason.
Come July 6, Ng and Quan will return with “Buzzing Cashier 2” - the second season of the popular reality TV show which debuted last year.
Just like the first, along with Food Spy Dennis Chew and various renowned Singapore chefs, Buzzing Saviours Ng and Quan set out to help improve the business of various food stallholders every week.
But who can forget the ugly confrontation with the ungrateful laksa hawker from the previous season who reverted to his old ways once the episode was over. So, will there be more dramatic moments and confrontations in store for viewers?
“Well, we can’t really say,” said Quan before adding with a laugh, “That’s like saying yes isn’t it?”
But even without asking, viewers can probably expect thrills and spills with the duo who are known for their straightforward demeanour and sharp-shooting tongues.
No one said that they had to be nice.
Ng revealed that in the first episode, the pair had unintentionally made a mother-daughter duo cry and request to withdraw from the series, after making a joke about them being ‘dan bai’, which sounds like egg white in Mandarin but also means stupid in Hokkien.
“We did apologise to them but at the same time, we told them that we just wanted to spice up the show, we wanted to have something entertaining,” explained Ng, adding that she and Quan are usually more anxious for the participants than anything else.
“If we just carry on like this, it’ll be no different from a regular cooking show.”
And this is definitely no regular cooking programme. For one, the ladies admitted that they have not picked up a single culinary skill nor recipe during the six-month long filming period.
Though if there’s one recipe that Quan and Ng have got right, it is that unmistakeable, easy chemistry between them.
Judging from the raucous laughter coming from the dynamic duo during a preview of the series at the show’s media conference, this season looks set to have viewers in stitches.
“It’s always fun (working with Quan), always stimulating, because she’s always full of surprises,” said Ng, “No matter how tired I am, I’ll always wake up when I’m working with her, or on the contrary, I’ll just totally switch off because she’s so good… I don’t mind being a flower vase, really!”
Quan also recalls how the director had to keep screaming, “Standby!” just to get the two talkative friends to be quiet and get filming on the way.
When asked what’s new on the show, Quan conveniently plonks her leg on the coffee table in front of her and points to her new upgraded “branded” blue rubber boot, while Ng adds that this season will feature new chefs who act as mentors to the participants.
Sounds like a recipe for one entertaining show with a cause.
For some fun, laughter and maybe even some tears, catch Kym Ng and Quan Yifeng on “Buzzing Cashier 2” premiering July 6, every Monday, 8pm on Channel 8.
