Horatio Crane's naughty mini-me

Horatio Crane's long-lost son is making his appearance on the seventh season of CSI: Miami. And 15-year-old Kyle Harmon, played by Evan Ellingson, is a juvenile delinquent whose middle name is Trouble.

When TODAY spoke to Evan over the phone, the actor was "getting a drink at the liquor store" in Los Angeles. Egad. Whatever would daddy say?

Then again, Evan seems to have nice, normal hobbies to balance his life out. Just before hitting the liquor store, he was hanging out at the aquarium and "looking at fish and taking pictures" with his new camera.

The 21-year-old has achieved some level of success, with roles in other TV shows like Titus, Complete Savages and 24, but being on CSI: Miami is taking his career to all-new levels.

Said Evan: "Everywhere I go, whether it's the gas station or Target, people are coming right up to me and saying: 'Hey, aren't you Horatio's son?'"

"I definitely feel honoured," said the skateboarding enthusiast about working closely with David Caruso, who plays the sunglass-fiddling Horatio.

"We hang out offset - he'll invite me to go have lunch and talk about what's going on in our lives and whatnot... It really helps when we're playing a family."

With his TV success and a role on the big screen as Cameron Diaz's son in My Sister's Keeper, is he the next hot hunk to look out for?

"Well, I don't want to go and say that I'm the next hot hunk around, but I do, once in a while, get fan mail," said Evan, laughing.

"Some girl wrote me a letter from the United Kingdom saying that a bunch of her friends were throwing an Evan Ellingson party, and they wanted me to fly out to the UK to attend.

"I didn't know whether to take them seriously because the girl told me she was 11 years old. It's fun. I like the whole fanatical thing. My brother's always laughing at me."

Does he think he's hotter than Zac Efron, then? "I don't want to answer that for myself, but you guys should have a poll or something!"

Winning that poll might help the single guy's love life. "Hopefully and maybe somebody will come along," said Evan. "But in the meantime, I'm spending time with the fish. They don't talk to me and they don't cause any drama!"

Take your pick between the bad boy and the hero

Sans F4, Vic Chou might have lost a couple of screaming adolescent fans, but a more grown-up Vic shows off a different side of himself in his new drama Black And White - and he also has a new partner in crime (fighting).

Chou and Black And White co-star Mark Chao were in Singapore recently, together with actress Ivy Chen and the show's director Tsai Yueh Hsun, to promote the drama currently airing on SingTel mioTV.

Black And White is about the unlikely pairing of two cops who are as different as night and day: Ruffian (played by Vic) operates in a lazy manner and leads a decadent lifestyle, while Hero (played by Mark) is an over-zealous crime-fighting machine. Drama and laughs abound in this slick and suspenseful production.

And we swear we didn't make up those names.

The good news is that Vic is abandoning his languishing lover roles in Taiwanese idol dramas such as Meteor Garden to play a bad boy.

"A very long time ago, you might not expect me to do something like this, but looking at it now, it's a big breakthrough," said the 28-year-old.

"I'd rather live on the outside like Ruffian - carefree and not having to worry about what others think of me. When it comes to relationships, though, I'd rather be my partner's hero."

Mark, 25, is the son of Taiwanese veteran actor and host Allen Chao - who also has a role in Black And White as a police chief.

He's a young hottie who's only just starting out, so he has much to learn from Vic. But he certainly isn't lacking in the looks department.

In the show, Ruffian and Hero are always trying to outdo each other. In real life, is there competition between Vic and Mark, too? Do they fight over who's hotter?

"No, I think Vic's hotter than I am," said Mark.

"I'm super hot," said Vic, with a wink. "But single eyelids are in fashion now, so Mark has a chance! He can compete with Vanness (Wu, his fellow F4-er)!"

Added Mark: "I think friendly competition is good. It's like playing tennis. We each put the ball in each other's courts. The outcome is not as important as the fact that we've just played a really great game."

Catch Black And White on Fridays at 8.30pm on Mei Ah Drama Channel (SingTel mio TV Ch 73)
