SINGAPORE: Watching the National Day Parade on Aug 9 is a grand Singaporean tradition. But don't let that stop you from expressing your love for Singapore in the all-night parade that begins right after it.

While patriotic expression might not usually manifest itself in the latest dance moves, one could argue that it does manifest itself in a cocktail (hey, this is a celebration and we are in Asia, right?). It's the perfect occasion to indulge in a Singapore Sling or three.

If you're one of the fortune-favoured NDP ticket holders, you won't even have to stop after the parade to change your clothes before heading directly to the nearest club, where you'll likely already be conforming to the night’s red-and-white dress code.

Although you might want to shower first. Paying tribute to the country and smelling like a Merlion are two completely different things.

FOR THE COCKTAIL THAT PUT THE LITTLE RED DOT ON THE MAP

WHAT: To celebrate the occasion, eM by the River is having a special offer on its Singapore Slings. An intoxicating blend of gin, cherry brandy and Benedictine, the bright pink cocktail was created by Hainanese bartender Ngiam Tiong Boon of the Long Bar at Raffles Hotel in the early 1900’s. But head for eM. Each cocktail here is only $9 on National Day.

WHY: Aren't visions of Singapore Slings already dancing in your head? This is your chance to toast Singapore’s most famed export to bars around the world. And all while, the parade fireworks flame up the night sky.

eM by the River SALUTES SINGAPORE: "eM wishes Singapore a very happy 43rd Birthday!" - Audrey Wong, Marketing Communications Manager

eM by the River, Gallery Hotel, Saturday (Aug 9).

FOR HIGHBALLS AND HOUSE

WHAT: It's not exactly an out-and-out national birthday party, but special guest and local DJ Nomsta will be doin' his thang up on our favourite roof in town, where you just might catch a glimpse of the fireworks.

WHY: A free view of the fireworks is worth the price of a cocktail, no?

LOOF SALUTES SINGAPORE: "We owe it all to you, Singapore. Happy birthday!" - Gary Tan, Marketing Manager

DJ Nomsta at Loof, Odeon Towers, Sat (Aug 9).

FOR RABELAISIAN REVELRY

WHAT: A celebration - and spoof - of all things Singaporean. Check out the ERP (Extreme Rhythm Parade) party at the Ministry of Sound. The entire club will be transformed into a grand parade complete with "parachuters", "Chinooks", and "cannons". You'll also see iconic landmarks and personalities such as the Merlion and Sir Stamford Raffles. A short performance at 11pm will involve acrobats, dancers and mimes. Guests can also look forward to a limited edition Progress Package (of drinks).

WHY: There'll be a giant ERP gantry hovering menacingly over the entrance — the only one in Singapore that’ll turn that frown upside down.

MOS SALUTES SINGAPORE: "They say that life begins at 40. But at age 43, we want the nation to fly high with open minds, party hard, rock it out and have more babies!"

ERP (Extreme Rhythm Parade) at the Ministry of Sound, Sat (Aug 9), 9pm till late.

FOR RED AND WHITE CHIC

WHAT: In celebration of our nation's 43rd birthday, Indochine's monthly themed party Plush is going all nationalistic. The Forbidden City's exotic oriental decor will be enhanced by a red-and-white smorgasbord of flags and balloons. With local R&B spin maestro DJ Paul T helming the decks, guests can expect a birthday bash in the truest Singapore spirit.

WHY: Now is the time to show off that little red cocktail dress you just bought. Show up in red and white and not only will you be sartorially demonstrating your loyalty to Singapore, you'll also be rewarded with a complimentary Chivas cocktail.

INDOCHINE SALUTES SINGAPORE: "One of the youngest nations in the world and yet one of the strongest in so many ways! The IndoChine Group and I would like to wish Singapore a very happy 43rd birthday. Here’s to many more great years ahead, filled with vibrant and buzzing international festivals and an even more vibrant tourism sector.” - Michael Ma, CEO and founder of the IndoChine Group.

Red & White, featuring DJ Paul T, at The Forbidden City, Clarke Quay. Tonight, from 10pm till late.

FOR GLITTERING GOOD TIMES

WHAT: Velvet Underground's 14th anniversary happily coincides with our nation's birthday, and the club has gloriously gilded plans for celebrating it. Each guest will receive a key at the door to try his or her luck at three safes. Each safe will contain prizes: A gold Motorola phone, gold bangles and a lifetime Velvet gold membership card ... or, erm, chocolates. The best-dressed person will receive a bottle of Grey Goose. The party is members-only from 10 to 11pm, after which it will be open to the public.

WHY: DJ Norman Jay MBE (UK) will be dishing out his signature mix of "the cream of '70s disco with the latest club anthems". Groove with your very own "Golden Goose", a gold-dusted Grey Goose cocktail served from a giant "Gold Bar".

ZOUK SALUTES SINGAPORE: "Party like it's your birthday! Growing up isn't easy but never lose that can do spirit. Velvet Underground celebrates her 14 golden years with you." -
