Singapore: The Arts Festival may be over but it doesn't mean you can't get a good dose from Singapore's Arts scene.
Running from 23 July till Saturday 25 July is Celebrate Drama! a community arts project organised by the Singapore Drama Educators Association (SDEA) featuring a community theatre component.
Building on previous community projects involving street kids as well as youths from Pertapis Children’s Home and Yayasan Mendaki, the SDEA will this year stage a devised performance piece called 'The Other Me' at the Arts House.
Besides the nine actor performance which explores hidden desires and dreams within each person, Celebrate Drama! will also feature efforts by schools.
The line-up includes Shakespeare's Hamlet by Fairfield Methodist Secondary School, as well as adaptations of two works by local playwright Kuo Pao Kun, "Mama Looking for a Cat" and "No Parking on Odd Days" which will be performed by teens from Commonwealth and Ngee Ann Secondary Schools.
The performances as well as SDEA drama workshops will run from Thursday till Saturday and tickets are available via email deaconnect@gmail.com or fax: 68761375.
Those who prefer art in the form of painting to sculptures should mark their calendars from the biennial Singapore Art Show that will take place across the island from 21 August to 4 October.
Organised by the National Arts Council, the Singapore Art Show showcases the diverse visual arts practices in Singapore and also aims to encourage public engagement in visual arts.
This year's show will be held in some 60 different venues around Singapore with the main Singapore Art Exhibition held at the Singapore Art Museum from 21 August to 18 October.
The theme, which gives a nod to Singapore's love for food and the smorgasbord of art offerings, is ‘ART BUFFET SINGAPORE!’ and comes with a $50,000 grant for the best submission, as well as the Voters’ Prize of $5,000 cash for the most popular work among visitors.
There will also be 50 other partner programmes and satellite events including an 'Amazing-Race' for participants to discover local urban art, a series of exhibitions and workshops by some 200 artists, including Cultural Medallion recipient Lim Tze Peng, and White Cubes which are exhibitions by independent galleries and artists.
