SINGAPORE: After appearing in so many movies, Malaysian singer-actor Aniu finally gets the girl in the romantic comedy "The Wedding Diary", a film that explores the concept of marriage.
And he is a very happy man.
"In my movies, I never had a girlfriend. Even when I played a gay man, I didn't have a boyfriend.
"In my own film, 'Ice Kacang Puppy Love ', I also didn't manage to get the girl," said Aniu, who plays a meek engineer that weds a wealthy lady in the film, at a press conference on Monday.
"This time, I am really happy because I finally get to have a wife, and she even proposes to me!"
Bedside blues
When asked which scenes left the deepest impression on him, Aniu was quick to reply.
"The bed scenes!" declared the singer, describing them as the most awkward scenes he has ever had to shoot.
Although he was very close with Hong Kong actress Elanne Kwong, who plays his wife in the film, because they often chat and joke around on the set, Aniu said things were no less awkward between them when they had to get in bed together for a few scenes.
"It's awkward, super awkward.
"Imagine you are on the bed, the camera is just there. And I have to immerse myself in the scene but can't get too carried away. You can feel her breath on you," Aniu said, his face a portrait of uneasiness.
"She was dressed so sexily. I wanted to stare but I dared not."
"It's worse when you know each other! I didn't even dare look at here while we were shooting."
"It's even more painful watching yourself on screen!"
Kwong nodded in agreement.
"At the gala premiere, we were slowly sinking in our seats as that scene came up," said Kwong.
"When it was over, we breathed a sigh of relief."
Kwong revealed that it was actually the first time she had to do intimate scenes like this, much less watch the racy scene unfold on the big screen, with the man she shared the bed with right next to her.
"It was the first time I had to do such scenes.
"Last time, all my shows had me liking someone who didn't like me, so there was never a good ending," said the actress with a laugh.
"Shooting it required a lot of preparation. I drank some wine to get some courage … especially since I played the more proactive one!"
Hint of unhappiness
Aniu seemed completely at ease and joked with Kwong throughout the press conference.
But the 36-year-old star became a little hesitant when the subject wandered to his rumoured marital troubles.
Malaysian tabloids had recently claimed that his marriage to his Taiwanese wife, whom he married in 2001, is on the rocks.
Aniu was tight-lipped on the matter and deftly sidestepped questions about it.
"My character in the film is in a very different situation from my own. They are at two totally different stages," said the singer.
"I prefer to keep my private life separate from the film."
