Take the winning template of a clever-rom-com-with-a-twist, throw in two delectable leads (Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan), mix it up with the essential cupid-inspired garnishes and you'll get a sure-fire hit, right?
But somewhere between the impressive New York skyline and gorgeous highlands of Scotland, Made of Honour goes awry. That's because this movie comes across as a paint-by-numbers effort, with one-dimensional characters, and takes a patience-testing 101 minutes to present cliché after cliché.
The saving grace comes from charismatic duo Dempsey and Monaghan, who play best buds Tom and Hannah, respectively. Their breezy chemistry enhances some of the movie's sweetness and the supporting cast including Oscar-winning Sydney Pollack as Tom's repeatedly-divorced dad and Kathleen Quinlan as Hannah's mother all try hard despite the plodding pace.
But other than the occasional gem of a joke ("As a Scotsman, are you more proud of Scotch Tape or McDonald's?") and scenes where Dempsey looks wickedly enjoyable, this recycled storyline will only please McDreamy-obsessed fans and diehard romantics. - TODAY/ar
