Kamil Haque at the 2004 Athens Games. Haque is the son of one of Singapore's 50 Greatest Athletes, Anwarul Haque.

The crux of the Olympian account occurred in the Archive's Section of the Stadium complex... I got my father to pose next to a picture of Tokyo Games poster. For me, this was truly a touching moment. Seeing my father, who has always been a pretty straight laced man, clearly experiencing an emotional moment was rare as it was heartfelt.

I feel sad. Another crucial part of Singapore history has moved on. Mr. Rajaratnam by penning the National Pledge itself has done more than enough to express what Singapore should be all about. Even my P1 son is reciting the Pledge by heart. My only hope is that the Pledge will serve to bind all Singaporeans of all walks of life and all echelons closer together so that Singapore is not torn apart whether from without or from within. The timing of when the Pledge was penned is even more crucial and poignant in reminding us the need of being Singaporean at a time when we did not have plenty. And so it is, even as the country has plenty (which cannot last), this Pledge of 38 words in 7 lines must surely tell us life is and has always been fragile. And so Leadership and Followship should participate together in integrating this Pledge somehow into our very consciousness especially with less cynicism. Even for myself.
