CANNES, France : The Cannes film festival got off to a glitzy start when it was officially launched on Thursday, with celebrities, industry-types and star gazers gathering on the French Riviera.
A-listers like Robert De Niro, Will Smith, Madonna, Julianne Moore, Gwyneth Paltrow, Scarlett Johansson and Javier Bardem are just some of the stars expected to walk the red carpet of the 61st edition of the prestigious festival.
And as Cannes swells to a cinematic orgy of over 200,000 participants and film buffs, an announcement was made and an idea tossed about: Is Singapore setting up to be the Hollywood of South-east Asia? It’s a far-fetched idea, but one that’s been given a recent boost with the entry of two players to the local world of filmmaking by the latter part of the year.
SINGAPORE: Raul Midón is often compared to Stevie Wonder. Perhaps it's because like Wonder, the American singer, songwriter and guitarist is blind.
In terms of music, the New Mexican native of Argentine and African American descent is in a class of his own, winning legions of fans with his acoustic brand of folk tunes which effectively fuse genres like blues, jazz and South American music.
Recently in Singapore for the Esplanade's Mosaic Music Festival, Midón – who is also a radio enthusiast – told MediaCorp's 938LIVE that radio-listening is a good source of entertainment and education.
Persistent, creative, passionate, adventurous and aesthetically-driven: That’s how photographer Jeff Hutchens describes himself.
These qualities can also be seen in his first exhibition in Singapore and Asia entitled Be Inspired: Igniting the Special Olympics Spirit. The exhibition opened yesterday at the National Library.
Last September, DHL and the Special Olympics worked together to take the Special Olympics Flame of Hope to China for the Special Olympics World Summer Games. Fourteen separate torches were taken to different parts of China, as well as cities around the world.
CANNES, France - Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman and Jack "Po the Panda" Black brought Hollywood to Cannes with feel-good movie for kids "Kung Fu Panda", that premiered at the film festival Thursday.
Jolie, heavily pregnant with twins, stepped up the celebrated Cannes red carpet flanked by partner Brad Pitt -- and a giant fake panda -- in what she said were lower-than-usual heels with special Nike soles for the gala screening of the Panda movie.
The Brangelina appearance at the 12-day filmfest briefly swept Cannes' more high-brow fare off centre-stage, this year showcasing a trend for highly-relevant political movies.
The latest offering by the fabled Dreamworks Animation team sees a clumsy flabby overweight panda voiced by Black and obsessed by martial arts catapulted from his job in a noodle restaurant to a role as a kung fu superhero.
Guitar-playing rocker David Cook and piano balladeer David Archuleta have outlasted fellow contestant Syesha Mercado to secure a place in the “American Idol” finale.
The battle of the Davids was inevitable and this will be the first all-male finale of “American Idol” since Ruben Studdard beat Clay Aiken in Season 2.
It is the end of a rocky road for Mercado who was voted out on Wednesday night after more than 56 million votes were cast.
The Japanese seem to have a fascination with death, from the appreciation of the Sakura because of its fleeting appearance in Spring, to the nobility of suicide in the form of seppuku.
The fascination continues with the 'Accuracy of Death', which looks at the thin thread between life and death that we are all remain unaware of as we rush about fulfilling our roles and relationships.
If you're expecting some deep meaning to existence through this film, you're looking in the wrong place. Don't expect any sugary coating around death in this film either.
Quick, name one male model. Sorry, Fabio doesn't count.
Can't do it? No surprise. Male models, even the few who work at the top of the fashion industry, are unknown to the general public. Unlike their female counterparts, they don't host television shows or represent multi-billion dollar lingerie companies. They also don't bank millions of dollars.
"It's the only industry in the world where women make more than men," says John W. Babin, co-director of the men's division at Red Model Management. A lot more. Female models command two to three times the rate of male models for the same work.
