24-hour badminton marathon held to raise funds for needy students
SINGAPORE : Parents of students at Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary decided to raise funds for the school's needy pupils, but they wanted to do something different.

So they organised a 24-hour badminton marathon which ended on Saturday, and set a new record.

14-year-old Mathew Bellido can now join his classmates who will be leaving on an overseas trip soon.


HK Chief Executive Donald Tsang visits NEWater plant
SINGAPORE : Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang - who is in Singapore on his first official visit - was briefed on the Republic's efforts to establish itself as a medical hub on Saturday.

He was also updated on Singapore's F1 night race and integrated resorts.

At his request, Mr Tsang also toured the Bedok NEWater Visitor Centre to learn more about Singapore's water recycling efforts.


Wearing of seat belts on small school buses to be made mandatory
SINGAPORE : The wearing of seat belts on small school buses is to be made mandatory. Transport Minister Raymond Lim revealed this on Saturday during a regular dialogue with constituents - where he said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is currently working out how best to do this.

The issue of seat belts on school buses is not new.

But it gained prominence when eight-year-old Russell Koh was killed last month in an accident many felt could have been avoided had he been wearing a seat belt.


Development plans taking shape in Punggol
SINGAPORE : Punggol residents can expect a new shopping mall as large as Junction 8, in their town centre, when the Housing and Development Board (HDB) launches the first sale site at Punggol in the next two to three years.

The site will be used for a mixed commercial and private residential development.

Earmarked as Singapore's waterfront town, much of the activities in Punggol will centre around a new waterway.


S'poreans returning from China talk about their close shave with quake disaster
SINGAPORE : Some 70 Singaporeans holidaying in China returned home early Saturday morning, after a close shave with the earthquake disaster.

The two groups under SA Tours had signed up for tours of between eight and 10 days.

One tour group member, Winifred Lee, glad she is home.


36 motorists arrested for drink driving in islandwide operation
SINGAPORE : Thirty-six motorists were arrested for drink driving in a five-hour islandwide operation which ended early Saturday morning.

The latest arrests bring the total number of motorists caught for drink driving this year to 1,449.

The Traffic Police said 129 motorists were given the breathalyser test after road blocks were set up in several areas.


Preschoolers stage exhibition to raise awareness of HFMD, dengue
SINGAPORE : Some 400 preschoolers - from the PPIS Early Childhood Education Centres - staged an exhibition on Saturday to raise awareness about hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) and dengue in Singapore.

The aim is to educate preschoolers about the importance of personal cleanliness.

Information about the danger of mosquito breeding and dengue was also on display.


36-year-old woman charged with murder of 12-year-old son
SINGAPORE : 36-year old Kang Kah Li was on Saturday morning charged at Tan Tock Seng Hospital by a Field Magistrate - with the murder of her 12-year-old son Tan Eu-Jin.

Kang is believed to have killed Eu-Jin at their flat in Toa Payoh early Friday morning.

The teenager was found motionless in bed and later pronounced dead at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.


Singapore Buddhist Lodge to build quake-proof schools in Sichuan
SINGAPORE : The Singapore Buddhist Lodge plans to co-fund the building of earthquake-proof schools in Sichuan province.

These schools will also double up as disaster shelters.

The Lodge has been involved in building schools in rural China for more than 20 years.


NParks launches Ketam Bike Park at Pulau Ubin
SINGAPORE : Singapore's first world-class mountain biking park was launched by the National Parks Board on Saturday.

Designed to standards set by the International Mountain Bicycling Association, the park at Pulau Ubin is guaranteed to give bikers a thrilling ride.

It was no mean feat waking up at the crack of dawn to get to Pulau Ubin, but it was all worth it for a group of bikers.


Donations continue to pour in for earthquake victims in China
SINGAPORE: Donations from various sectors in Singapore continue to pour in for earthquake victims in China.

MediaCorp plans to donate S$100,000, while Raffles Medical Group is pledging S$20,000.

Local bakery chain, BreadTalk, is also doing its part to raise funds by selling 'Peace Panda' buns. The entire proceeds from the sale of the S$2 buns will go towards helping the quake victims.


SCDF begins search and rescue mission in quake-hit Sichuan
SINGAPORE : Singapore handed over to the Chinese authorities the first tranche of its US$200,000 aid package on Saturday.

It consists of medical supplies.

Over the next few days, it will be sending drinking water, purifying tablets, tents, groundsheets, blankets, sleeping bags and food supplies. The Singapore Civil Defence Force's (SCDF) Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team is also in China - working alongside rescue teams from Japan and South Korea.


Sole proprietor gets 6 months' jail for making false GST claims
SINGAPORE : A businessman has been sentenced to six months' jail for making false Goods and Services Tax (GST) refund claims.

40-year-old Ong Seow Hsiung, a wholesale exporter of vehicle parts to Indonesia, pleaded guilty to seven counts of tax evasion.

He was also slapped with a S$202,245 penalty - which is calculated as being three times the amount he received, but was not entitled to.


Singapore FM lauds China's media coverage in quake aftermath
SINGAPORE : The Chinese government has handled information surrounding the quake in a timely manner, said Singapore's Foreign Minister George Yeo who is on official visit to Beijing.

He said that not only were news released within a few minutes, there were also minute-by-minute accounts in its aftermath.

"All these is beamed to the Chinese people, giving them a sense of common cause, and it has also aroused in them a tremendous sense of solidarity of working together, feeling as one," said Mr Yeo, after visiting several Beijing Olympics venues.


Defence Minister Teo in South Africa for official visit from May 15-18
SINGAPORE : Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean is on his first official visit to South Africa from May 15-18.

He will visit the Combat Training Centre in Lohatla, where a three-week live-firing exercise - codenamed Lightning Warrior - is taking place.

Mr Teo has met South African Defence Minister Mosiuoa Patrick Lekota, Minister in the Presidency Essop Pahad, Minister for Intelligence Services Ronnie Kasrils and Deputy President of the African National Congress Kgalema Motlanthe.


Traffic police figures show overall road accidents on the rise
SINGAPORE: Statistics from the traffic police showed that the number of overall accidents rose year-on-year over the past decade, from 5,636 in 1998 to 8,323 last year.

Figures also showed minor accidents accounted for the bulk of overall accidents.

The number of serious accidents, however, decreased from 270 in 1998 to 80 last year.


HK Chief Executive Donald Tsang in Singapore till May 18
SINGAPORE : Hong Kong's Chief Executive Donald Tsang is in Singapore at the invitation of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for a three-day visit till May 18.

Mr Lee hosted the chief executive to dinner at the Istana on Friday evening. They exchanged views on key regional developments and uncertainties in the global environment, including the economic outlook and inflation.

Mr Tsang, who is accompanied by delegation of senior officials, also briefed Mr Lee on the political and economic scene in Hong Kong.


MediaCorp donates S$100,000 for China quake relief
SINGAPORE: MediaCorp staff are doing their own bit to help the victims in Sichuan's earthquake.

Funds donated by the staff will be matched dollar-for-dollar by MediaCorp, which owns Channel NewsAsia.

The company on Friday announced that it is seeding this effort with S$100,000 as part of its corporate social responsibility commitments.


S$700,000 worth of relief items sent to Myanmar by Red Cross
SINGAPORE: The Singapore Red Cross on Friday sent close to S$700,000 worth of emergency relief items to Myanmar.

The items comprise 1,000 tents, 35,000 ready-to-eat food packs, over a million water purification tablets and 10 units of hand-powered water purification systems.

These items were received by the Myanmar Red Cross for survivors of Cyclone Nargis.


S'pore-KL shuttle deal ends in June but frequency of flights unchanged
SINGAPORE: Starting from June 1, passengers will no longer be able to buy tickets to fly between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur at the shuttle flight counter.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Malaysian Airline System (MAS) announced on Friday that they are scrapping the 25-year-old deal that allows walk-in passengers under a shared shuttle service.

The airlines said the number of flights will remain the same.
