AYG: Thais storm Siloso for golden double
SINGAPORE: Before the heavens opened to unleash a torrent on Sunday afternoon, Thailand let loose a red and blue storm of their own on Kazakhstan at the Asian Youth Games beach volleyball competition.

Both the boys' and girls' finals at Sentosa's Siloso Beach pitted Thais against Kazakhs, and the Southeast Asian nation took gold in both categories with dominating performances that won the crowd over.

Kitted out in red tops, the Thai girls' Aunchalee Yunsuwan and Prateep Kambut triumphed 21-14, 21-12 over Bakhtygul Samalikova and Lyubov Bogatu, who seemed cowered by their opponents' war-cries, which came after each point won.

Most volunteers also usually volunteer with friends, or with fellow volunteers they meet through the activity.

Hiring a tutor for daughter paid off in more ways than one
SINGAPORE: English-educated Nicholas Soh's curiosity in Chinese history was piqued after watching his then-primary school daughter study Chinese proverbs.

Fast-forward 20 years, and Mr Soh, now 57, beat competitors such as a Chinese-language teacher and a Chinese magazine editor, to take home the grand prize of more than S$10,000 from The Chinese Challenge Grand Final television show. The prize included S$5,000 worth of NTUC vouchers and S$4,000 cash.

The two-hour challenge, which is part of this year's Speak Mandarin Campaign, aired on MediaCorp's Channel 8 on Sunday night. It was launched on March 30 with a 12-week online quiz to showcase Chinese language and culture. Six of the top 100 contestants were selected for Sunday's final. A total of 15,000 people participated online.

Football: Masrezwan's strike caps Geylang victory
SINGAPORE: Masrezwan Masturi celebrated his first home appearance in Bedok Stadium for the S.League season with a goal as his team overcame Balestier Khalsa 2-0.

Captain Noor Ali opened the scoring for Geylang United at the 5th minute before Masrezwan added another at the stroke of half time, as the Eagles picked up their first S.League win in over a month.

On a waterlogged pitch which saw the kickoff delayed by almost 25 minutes due to wet weather, Masrezwan, who had just recovered from an anterior cruciate ligament injury which kept him away from action for nearly ten months, had the first shot of the game as he sent the ball over the bar.

Boarding schools take steps to tackle spread of H1N1 flu
SINGAPORE: Since the discovery of an H1N1 flu cluster at a boarding school here, other schools with boarding facilities have taken steps to minimise the spread of the virus.

At Dunman High School, 30 boarders who have been quarantined due to the H1N1 flu are housed in isolation rooms. Another 20 have been moved to a separate hostel, as there is a lack of space at its Tanjong Rhu campus.

Principal of Dunman High School, Sng Chern Wei, said: "By providing services like meal services, laundry services and by having washing facilities inside the hostel quarantine rooms, they need not step outside the hostel quarantine rooms at all throughout the seven days.”

Long hours at work can lead to chronic pain, but those aches in the legs and arms may be symptoms of a bigger problem.

Doctors say the most common cause of such symptoms is pressure on the nerves in the spine and neck. They say this often leads to shooting pain felt in the arms and lower back, and may even affect the legs.

Singapore won't repeal homosexual law
SINGAPORE: Law Minister K Shanmugam has said Singapore will not decriminalise gay sex but the courts have the power to decide how the law, Section 377, is applied. Section 377A of the Penal Code deems sex between men a crime.

A recent ruling by the New Delhi High Court legalising gay sex between consenting adults in India raised questions on whether Singapore might go the same way. Both countries share the same Penal Code, inherited from the colonial British.

In a dialogue with Punggol residents on Sunday, Mr Shanmugam said Section 377 will remain as homosexuality is still not accepted by most Singaporeans.
