RATING:

It is the dystopian future. Man and machine have fought a war - yes, again - and destroyed everything. Well, almost everything. Enter the titular protagonist, a self-automated doll that finds itself wandering amid the ruins of a once great city. But he is not alone.

What follows is a journey of discovery seen from the viewpoint of 9, as he finds comrades and common enemies in his quest to discover what's going on.

If you think this sounds like the story of man's quest to find the meaning of life, you're not far wrong, I reckon. But don't worry, it's not some philosophical chronicle - there's too much action going on to dwell on "why are we here?"

Plus, it's an animated feature targeted at children, and it lasts just over an hour, so how much metaphysical discussion can be squeezed into that space anyway?

Produced by Tim Burton and Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov, and featuring the voices of Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connelly, John C Reilly and Christopher Plummer, 9 is a heartwarming story about how you can beat the odds if you stand up to adversity.
