Game Over for Gamer

RATING:

SINGAPORE : “Gamer” is set in the future, that takes place in an ultra-wired-up culture that enables multi-player addicts to use real human beings as avatars.

One of the more popular games is Slayers and its star avatar is a convicted felon, Kable played by one Gerard Butler.

A sinister plot for world domination is soon uncovered and it is up to Kable to save the world from mind-controlling freaks. But since he's controlled by an unknown gamer, there's only so much Kable can do because he's someone's plaything. But Kable's no dumb jock, he'll soon figure things out.

To sum “Gamer” up, I would say that it is like a steroid-pumped version of the Jim Carrey film “The Truman Show” on crack. That's the furthest I'd go to compliment it.

“Gamer” is like one of those poorly conceptualised straight-to-DVD titles that is high on body count but low on storyline.

“300” star Gerard Butler tries hard to carry the film on his own, but he's held back by a limp yet over-elaborate plot and cheesy dialogue. But there are those who will watch it for the shock-and-awe non-stop violence and explosions, a treat for the garden variety adrenaline junkie.

As for the rest of us, you should give “Gamer” a miss and watch these action-thriller Sci-Fi films instead: “Blade Runner”, “The Matrix” trilogy and “Total Recall”.

It's Game Over for “Gamer” as far as I'm concerned.
