A sorry wave of affairs

RATING:

SINGAPORE: Billed as South Korea's first big-budget disaster movie, "Haeundae: The Deadly Tsunami" sees the country's beloved Haeundae Beach and its surroundings completely destroyed by a CGI-ed super-duper wave.

A blockbuster hit in its homeland, the supposedly mega budget spent on special effects - with a little help from Hollywood - just doesn't add up, leaving one to wonder where all the money went to.

Coupled with a generic plot (look, there's the flustered scientist trying to warn the authorities who refuse to listen!) and one dimensional characters played by a cast of Korean award-winning A-listers, including Ha Ji Won, Park Joong Hoon, Sol Kyung Gu and Uhm Jung Hwa, there are just too many empty thrills to enable suspended disbelief throughout the film.

Referencing the devastating real life 2004 tsunami disaster in the aim of authenticity is not just unnecessary and exploitative, but also a little too soon. -
