RATING:
SINGAPORE : For most of their second album “Love Drunk”, American rock band Boys Like Girls do not change much from the winning formula of their self-titled first album.
The songs are still highly melodic and instantly catchy with a punchy attack. If you liked Boys Like Girls the first time around, you will love them even more here.
There are a few confusing takes in “Love Drunk” that pulled the album down on the whole, like the duet with Taylor Swift on "Two Is Better Than One", what I consider to be a sticky sweet mess which does not reflect well on either Taylor or the boys. There was also a super dull attempt at a power ballad with an agonisingly long instrumental fadeout. If these songs represent directions the band may wish to explore more in the future, I suggest they seriously rethink matters.
Top tracks that save the album are "Chemicals Collide", "Contagious" and "Love Drunk".
Overall, “Love Drunk” is a solid chapter two for Boys Like Girls. The title song has been another well deserved pop radio hit for the group. I’m kept pretty happy with the emotional and romantic song lyrics presented in an easy to sing along fashion.
Aside from the points where the album slows down, everything is nearly seamless here.
