RATING:
SINGAPORE : Jeremih Felton is the new kid on the R&B block. He was nominated recently for best R&B soul act in music for the MOBO, or Music of Black Origins Awards, and his first single “Birthday Sex” went to No. 1 on the US R&B chart.
This Chicago newcomer is all about dealing it straight on his self-titled debut album. No double entendres or metaphors, whatever he sings, he sings it literally, which is kind of refreshing.
For example in the song “My Ride”, he literally means his car, so don't be expecting any deep lyrics in this album. But then again, he's only 21, so what can you expect?
In a music landscape where R&B music is big and competition is so stiff, vocally, for me, he just doesn't stand out. No doubt he can hold a tune but it just doesn't have that pizzazz that makes me sit up and notice.
The album is a bit of a hit and miss but overall it does have some pretty good beats. For me, highlights of the album were the raunchy slow jam “Birthday Sex”, which was by far the best track on the album.
There was also “Buh Bye”, a dance anthem about breaking up that reminds me quite a bit of Neyo, who has been lauded as the next Michael Jackson.
There's also the anthem like “Imma Star”, the second single released which has a pretty sexy groove going on.
Personally, I reckon Jeremih has potential, whether or not he will rise up to the challenge or fade away like a one-hit wonder, it remains to be seen. Oh by the way, the album contains quite a bit of explicit content so parental guidance is recommended.
