RATING:
It doesn't matter if your favourite colour is black. Dabble in a little Color from Taiwan, a fresh pop-rock act and discover just why they've been storming album charts with their self-titled debut.
The two-member band of lead vocalist Xiao Gang and guitarist Cola, who started out performing on streets and trying their luck on reality TV singing hit the jackpot when their songs were used on a popular Taiwanese television show.
Singing about hopes, dreams and ideals in the album's leadoff track "Brave Dumbo" it's clear Color is not a case of pure luck for the duo.
With hints of Brit-rock in their music styling, the song puts a stamp on the band's personal brand which is a freshness and genuineness in the music, something you don't find in mature bands and which also what sets Color apart from the crowd of newbies.
The album offers an even mix of fast and slow numbers, all penned by the group, except for one.
Two tracks that stand out on the album are "Ironman" and "Rogue Justice" which are crazily catchy.
The duo's songwriting talent in these two pieces are helped by arrangements that are smart and polished.
Also noteworthy are the tracks "Prove" and "M Right" which are slow but not bland, with “M Right" drawing you in with its melodic notes.
There are misses of course.
Ironically the song "Cry", makes you want to do just that with its cringe-worthy lyrics that are mediocre at best.
Closing number "One Piece", which is the group's tribute to the Japanese manga of the same name, is unimpressionable, despite its detailed arrangement.
Where singing is concerned, Xiao Gang, who's blessed with a set of clear vocals, manages to come across fluid and easy on the ears.
Guitarist Cola who also shares vocal duties on several tracks, doesn't sound too bad either.
As a maiden release, this is reasonably decent and definitely worth a listen. - CNA
