SINGAPORE : In 1997, Aussie soap star Natalie Imbruglia, blazed to fame in the music world with her indie pop hit single "Torn". She even earned a Grammy nomination for her debut album "Left In The Middle".
Twelve years on, and several rather similar sounding records later, Natalie Imbruglia is finally coming out of her shell.
Her latest album, a very aptly named "Come To Life", took four years to create. This time round, you are going to get a darker, slightly more experimental Natalie but still just as introspective.
The first half of the album is kind of melancholic and features two tracks written by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, which fortunately or unfortunately, depending on whether you like Coldplay, sound like leftovers from the band's earlier albums.
There's for example, "Lukas" which seems a little glaringly like Suzanne Vega's "Luka" that's produced by Brian Eno, the same guy who produced Coldplay's "Viva La Vida". But with a nice guitar melody, it’s actually not too bad a song.
Now Natalie actually does surprise in the second half of the album going all electro-pop on us, ala Lady Gaga and Kylie Minogue, and with a dash of Goldfrapp. It's something new and you've got to give her credit for experimenting and the result is pretty decent.
Overall, the album is a mish-mash of sounds and personally it didn't speak to me but I think it's still worth a listen.
