Welsh songbird Katherine Jenkins brings a new twist to classical music

RATING:

SINGAPORE : Katherine Jenkins is a Welsh light classical-popular crossover singer. She is not a new artiste having her first album called "Premiere", recorded back in 2004. Her usual range of work features a mixture of arias, popular songs, hymns and light classical music.

Her seventh album, "Believe", was released on 26 October 2009 and although her direction remains fundamentally the same, this CD includes song choices which have raised eyebrows in the industry and have certainly made people sit up and take notice.

"Believe" is a far more dramatic effort from her and is unashamedly aimed at trying to win her a bigger worldwide audience. And the album largely works because of the choice of material and her re-interpretation of its presentation.

"No Woman No Cry" and "Bring Me To Life" are the most unexpected of her choices, but they both work. Jenkins' classical style remains, but her seemingly odd choices give her music something new and fresh.

Detractors and purists may have bones to pick with this talented performer but even the most cynical of them will have to agree that "Who Wants To Live Forever" – yes, that Queen classic - is undoubtedly one of the highlights, a hidden gem towards the end of the album.

All in all, this album takes Jenkins' talents a step further, albeit by crossing over and going deeper into mainstream pop than ever before. I guarantee, after a few listens though, you will get sucked in and won't want to turn it off.
