RATING:

SINGAPORE : For most of us ladies out there, receiving a bedroom visit from Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (picture) in the middle of the night is but a fantasy. In "Tooth Fairy", however, Johnson makes a different kind of visit - and then makes off with your molar.

Johnson plays hard-charging hockey player Derek Thompson, whose infamy in the sport arises from his habit of knocking opponents' teeth out at any given opportunity - hence, the nickname "The Tooth Fairy". He's cynical, mean, and does not hesitate in shattering the hopes and dreams of young fans.

Thompson is duly summoned to fairyland and is sentenced by the queen of tooth fairies (Julie Andrews) to two weeks of hard labour collecting kiddie teeth. Of course, not before learning the importance of having dreams and letting others dream, et cetera, et cetera.

At first glance, one might think, "Oh no, not another kiddie film starring The Rock." But "Tooth Fairy" is an entertaining family comedy that will likely leave you with a newfound, albeit grudging, respect for Johnson. His rough, tough, gruff brand of comedy plays off perfectly against Stephen Merchant's awkward, timid fairy advisor Tracy.

The sight of the burly ex-wrestler in tights and a frilly pink tutu doesn't hurt either.

Yes, "Tooth Fairy" is far from what one would call brilliant. But for a flick to bring the kiddies to, it's good enough.
