RATING:
SINGAPORE : For fans of the hit manga-turned-television series of the same name, "Nodame Cantabile" is a silver-screen dream come true, its musical tale brought to life by the same actors from the popular TV show.
The rest of us can nap.
Picking up where the TV series left off, young orchestra conductor (Tamaki Hiroshi) is appointed the job of leading an ensemble whose recent poor performances have failed to impress the public.
Meanwhile, his somewhat eccentric girlfriend (Ueno Juri) is in the midst of preparing for her piano examination, and is thrilled when Hiroshi asks her to play with his orchestra.
First, they must overcome their individual problems and learn to work together, whether with each other or with their fellow musicians. Yawn.
It may read like an inspiring storyline - it is anything but. "Nodame Cantabile" is painfully dull, the humour ridiculously over-the-top, and the chemistry between the two mains almost non-existent. In fact, viewers will find themselves wondering how Hiroshi and Juri even wound up as a couple, seeing as they are barely on the same page.
Perhaps the only saving grace is the gorgeous classical soundtrack. "Nodame Cantabile" is strictly for fans - no standing ovations here.
