SINGAPORE: There is beauty in simple storytelling, and in the world of animation - where one-upmanship seems to be the order of the day - "Dragon Hunters", with its gorgeous fantasy universe of likeable characters and charming storyline, is a real joy to watch.
In order to help her uncle Lord Arnold get rid of monstrous mutant creatures known as The Dragons, who terrorise and wreck havoc in her futuristic medieval world, young Zoe (Mary Mouser) decides she has to find some heroes. So, when she meets Gwizdo (Rob Paulson) and Lian-Chu (Forest Whitaker) - a couple of two-bit, fly-by-night dragon hunters - she convinces them to embark on the greatest adventure of their lives.
Based on Arthur Qwak’s graphic book and subsequent comic book series, animated TV series and video game, this French 3-D animated feature film (dubbed in English) was a big hit in Europe this year - and it is obvious why. Directed by Guillaume Ivernel and Qwak himself, it’s an action-fantasy spectacular with a stunningly-crafted and painstakingly-detailed make-believe world.
The scrupulously designed fight scenes, coupled with distinct character designs, fuel the imagination and leave you wondering why you’ve never imagined a visionary animated world beyond Pixar and Dreamworks. - TODAY/sh
