SINGAPORE: The total sales for the Great Singapore Sale this year fell by 1.9 per cent from a year earlier to S$5.3 billion – standing up well against a 6.7 per cent drop in tourist arrivals during the period.
The Singapore Retailers Association (SRA) revealed the figures on Thursday at its annual awards for outstanding retailers. The awards recognise retailers for their outstanding impact through innovation, creativity and retail excellence.
The association noted that the past year had been a challenging time for the industry, especially with rising rental rates. However, it has been in dialogue with landlords over the rental structures.
Dr Jannie Tay, president, Singapore Retailers Association said: "Because of the strong impact of rising rental rates, SRA initiated dialogues with all landlords and they have been forthcoming in listening and understanding our predicament.
"They are now more open to discussion and finding solutions and options were rentals are concerned. The fact that new malls like ION and Orchard Central have been able to open with higher occupancy rates bear testimony to this win-win relationship."
For the first time, the SRA had an award recognising green efforts. The two winners were - CK Tang and the Body Shop.
The SingTel Shop at Jurong Point won the "Best Retail Concept of the Year", while the "Best New Entrant of the Year" went to the National Geographic Store at VivoCity.
Cold Storage won the "Best Retail Event of the Year" for its Kids Run that aimed to promote a healthy lifestyle. Paragon and United Square shopping mall both won the award for being the "Best Shopping Centre".
The "Manager of the Year" was Ms Celestina Lee for Cold Storage, Marketplace and Shop N Save. And the "Young Executive of the Year" award went to Mr Loh Yen Hon, a pharmacist at Guardian.
The SRA also presented its excellent service awards to almost 2,000 recipients.
