SINGAPORE : Leading healthcare company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has decided to close its Stiefel manufacturing facility in Singapore by the end of 2013.
Stiefel Labs said in a statement that the move came after GSK completed a network strategy review following its acquisition of the Stiefel business in July 2009.
The company said production will continue at the site until all products are transferred to alternative facilities.
"The decision is the result of underutilized capacity, not only across the Stiefel network, but also across the network of GSK sites," it added.
Joe Burns, vice president, Global Manufacturing and Product Supply Chain, Stiefel Labs, said: "GSK regrets the impact this decision would have on our employees and on the local community.
"Employees at the Singapore site have made significant contributions to the success of Stiefel. This decision is not a reflection on staff at the Singapore site."
There are about 100 employees that will be affected by the closure of the facility. They will be offered financial compensation, training opportunities and outplacement support, the company said.
The Singapore factory was established in 1984 and manufactures a range of liquids, lotions, creams, gels, powders and soaps.
