SINGAPORE: Singapore Airlines (SIA) will make changes to its route network in the coming months that will see it streamlining certain sectors while increasing frequency on several routes.
SIA said that despite positive signs of a recovery in demand, operating conditions remain challenging and yields remain under pressure.
Changes include the suspension of the twice-weekly services to Pakistan and Nanjing. The last Singapore-Karachi-Lahore service will run on 17 February 2010, while the last Singapore-Nanjing service will run on 26 March 2010.
"These suspensions are regrettable but are necessary as a result of the performance of the two routes. SIA will be assisting affected customers in making alternative travel arrangements," the airline said.
Services to Ho Chi Minh City and Kuala Lumpur will also be affected. The frequency of flights to both cities will be reduced.
However, the overall flight frequency between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur will remain unchanged at 54 per week. This is because SIA's regional unit SilkAir will be taking over the operation of one of its daily services.
Meanwhile, the global economic recovery has prompted SIA to raise the frequency on some routes. It will increase the number of flights to Houston, Manchester, Newark, Moscow, Dhaka, Mumbai, Delhi, Colombo and Seoul.
These changes will be made next year, with the exception of the adjustments to the Singapore-Moscow-Houston service that will come into effect this Friday.
SIA will also start flying to Munich and Tokyo's Haneda airport next year.
SIA said it will continue to carefully match capacity to demand across the network and customers will be informed at the earliest opportunity where changes are made.
