SINGAPORE: Singapore's multi-media company MediaCorp has succeeded in its counter claims of copyright infringement against Internet start-up RecordTV.
RecordTV was held by the High Court to have infringed copyright laws by allowing users to record programmes shown on MediaCorp's Channel 5, Channel 8 and Channel NewsAsia.
In 2007, RecordTV had sued MediaCorp for millions of dollars for groundless threats of copyright infringement. MediaCorp then counter sued.
In giving his decision on Monday, High Court Judge Andrew Ang said MediaCorp had made out its case against RecordTV.
The judge ruled that RecordTV is liable for copyright infringement by communicating MediaCorp's broadcasts and films to the public, and he granted MediaCorp's request for an injunction against RecordTV.
Justice Ang also ruled that damages in favour of MediaCorp would be assessed by the Registrar.
Responding to the judgement, MediaCorp said it is delighted with the verdict.
Chang Long Jong, MediaCorp's deputy CEO for TV, said: "First of all, we are all very happy with the verdict. It is not just a victory for MediaCorp. We think it is an important precedent for any IP owner operating in the new media space.
"This verdict, the court's ruling itself, also serves as a very strong assurance and affirmation for us to continue to produce quality programmes for our viewers, not just in Singapore but anywhere in the world."
Justice Ang said he has completed the grounds of decision and will issue it to both parties shortly.
