SINGAPORE : Helicopter manufacturer Eurocopter is investing about S$12 million in a new regional headquarters in Singapore.
It is due to unveil the new facility at the Seletar Aerospace Park on Wednesday.
The 9,200-square metre facility is scheduled to open at the end of the year.
Demand for helicopters is set to grow in Southeast Asia and Eurocopter is positioning itself to tap that growth.
It is moving its existing Loyang Way facility to Seletar Aerospace Park to double the space available for its maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services, as well as for research and development activities.
Lutz Bertling, CEO, Eurocopter, said: "We simply need space. We are more than doubling the size in Seletar in our current subsidiary. We need to concentrate our activities because currently due to space limitations, we have something here in Singapore and something there in Singapore. So, it is a more integrated side."
Beyond Singapore, Eurocopter is also planning to open an MRO facility in Malaysia and start a tail boom manufacturing facility in Indonesia this year.
The company is planning to target growth opportunities in Southeast Asia, China and India.
Mr Bertling said: "India's infrastructure as a whole cannot cope with the growth of the economy. Therefore, helicopters are a means of transportation which are very suited for that. Then, we see clearly Malaysia and Vietnam in the oil and gas area... The Chinese market will grow significantly as well, depending on the lifting of regulations."
Eurocopter hopes to increase its services revenue to account for some 35 to 40 per cent of overall sales in Asia by 2015. - CNA/ms
