Visitor arrivals to Singapore hit 9.7 million last year

SINGAPORE : The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) is expecting to see an increase in the number of business travellers to Singapore this year, as the global economy recovers.

Melissa Ow, assistant chief executive, Business Travel and MICE Group, STB, said: "Barring any unforeseen circumstances in the global economy, I should think that with the recovering business sentiments around the world, we are optimistic in terms of what Business Travel and MICE visitors will bring for Singapore in 2009, and moving forward into 2010."

According to STB, the average attendance to Business Travel and Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) events declined by 10 to 15 per cent last year, particularly in the first half. But the numbers picked up strongly in the second half.

Singapore is expected to rake in about S$350 million from new events already secured over the next three years.

Business travellers and MICE visitors accounted for over 30 per cent of total visitor arrivals in Singapore in 2008. - CNA/ms
