SINGAPORE : Stocks in Singapore closed 1.59 per cent higher on Monday, following better-than-expected US jobs data.

On Friday, the US Labor Department reported that the unemployment rate held steady at 9.7 per cent in February despite adverse winter conditions.

Analysts said that receding fears over Greece's debt also encouraged risk appetite.

The Straits Times Index rose 44.28 points to end at 2,834.57.

Volume was 1.46 billion shares.

Gainers led losers 314 to 152.

Jardine Cycle and Carriage rose 78 cents to S$26.30 while Singapore Airlines fell 28 cents to S$15.62. - AFP/CNA/ms
