SINGAPORE: Singapore and China plan to develop a massive 1,450 square kilometre food zone in Jilin province in north east China.
The China Jilin-Singapore Modern Agricultural Cooperation Food Zone aims to become a major production centre for disease-free agricultural products.
The Jilin City municipal government signed five collaborative agreements with four Singapore entities on Friday as part of the launch. Temasek unit Singbridge International will conduct a planning study to assess the commercial feasibility of jointly developing the project.
Another Temasek unit, Fullerton Financial Holdings, is to build village banks in Jilin City to serve the SMEs, consumers and farmers in the region.
Singapore Food Industries and its China partners have signed an agreement to set up an integrated pig farm.
And the Agri-food & Veterinary Authority will help to establish and maintain a Disease-Free Zone within Jilin Province.
National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan said: "The Jilin Food Zone project is a good example of how our countries can work together to achieve mutual benefits in food safety and food supply resilience. Singapore imports food from all over the world and has a stringent food safety regime,
"China wants to strengthen its food safety regime and produce food for both domestic and export markets. There is a lot of complementarity for our two countries to collaborate and this Food Zone project." - CNA/fa
