SINGAPORE: The Great Singapore Sale (GSS) is off to a good start, with sales in the first weekend alone amounting to S$46 million.
This was up 48 per cent from last year, according to numbers out on Wednesday, from MasterCard Singapore.
According to the credit card franchise, most of the spending took place in restaurants, hotels and departmental stores.
Its local card-holders spent S$30 million during the first weekend alone, up some 45 per cent from last year.
For retailer Tangs, fashion remains a top buy - but shoppers are also checking out the luggage section with much fervour this year.
Ellen Yeo, VP, Store Management, Tangs, said: "For this year’s GSS, we see a lot of people buying fashion products, such as handbags or accessories, and our studio shoes. And of course, we also see a lot of people snapping up luggage at our style travel.
"I guess it's because the economy is doing well, and people are travelling a lot more. And so, luggage is flying off the shelves a lot faster. And with the GST coming up in July, some of our home products are also doing pretty well."
MasterCard said the jump in sales was a result of a wider range of merchandise as well as deals and promotions.
Meanwhile, tourists chalked up some S$16 million worth of purchases during the first weekend - up 54 per cent from last year.
Visitors from the US, Malaysia and Japan have been the biggest spenders at the start of this year's sale.
Indian tourists, who made it to the top three big spenders list last year, are the only ones that have not made the list this year.
But they and Chinese visitors are among those whose spending has increased the most.
Visitors from South Africa, Pakistan and Vietnam top the list for the sharpest increase in spending this year.
Shopping aside, food and dining remain a key aspect of the Great Singapore Sale experience, with Mastercard-holders chalking up a total of US$2.5 million in purchases.
