SINGAPORE : InfoPrint Solutions, a joint venture (JV) between IBM and Japan's Ricoh, is seeing growth opportunities in Southeast Asia's printing business.

The company opened its Singapore office on Tuesday, saying it wants to tap on small-and-medium-sized (SME) firms here to grow.

InfoPrint makes high-end industrial and production set printers.

It is looking to grow along with the region's services sectors, using Singapore as a hub.

Steven Kovach, GM of Asia Pacific at InfoPrint Solutions, said: "These printers are really set up for banks and telcos, and companies that have very high output and statements, and things of that nature...

"The ASEAN market is very important for us. It comprises not only emerging market places but also areas like Singapore that are fairly well-established and very important for us to get a foothold in, with this new firm."

The printing company says its Asia Pacific business, excluding Japan, makes up only 6% of its global business.

But it has higher growth potential compared to other overseas markets.

InfoPrint says it is still working out specific growth projections and investment sum, although it aims to invest in Singapore's workers.

"We are still ironing out the details. But what I can tell you is that our focus in Singapore is really to drive and grow the SME market space. In order for us to do that, a lot of investment needs to be put into the skills, the people and especially our local business partners in Singapore," said Alvin Chan, ASEAN, South Asia, InfoPrint Solutions.

InfoPrint owns some 200 patents worldwide.

It does not have immediate plans to build a plant in the region or to set up its research and development work in Singapore. But it says it is keeping its options open. - CNA /ls
