SINGAPORE: SingTel has raised its stakes in the mobile TV arena by launching its mio TV on Mobile service, allowing subscribers to watch a wide range of TV programmes on the go.

Available channels on this new service are among those currently on the mio TV platform such as MediaCorp's Channel 8 Prime Time, Channel NewsAsia and KBS World.

mio TV on Mobile promises live TV feeds and comes with an Electronic Programme Guide which uses a TV remote controller-like user interface to allow subscribers to select and toggle easily between channels.

The service also boasts an interactive programming guide which displays information up to seven days in advance.

For SingTel, this is one key step in boosting its 3G services.

Wong Soon Nam, vice president, Consumer Marketing, SingTel, said: "The whole idea is to create service differentiation and to bring about innovative services for our customers. I believe mio TV Mobile will give us that edge."

SingTel is investing S$220 million to improve its 3G service, and mio TV on Mobile and SMS plus are among its latest offerings aimed at expanding its 3G subscriber base.

However, some analysts said mobile consumers in Singapore may not be ready for this new service.

Claudio Checchia, research manager, IDC, said: "This is an interesting experiment because a lot of Singaporeans actually spend time commuting on public transportation. There is a potential there to be exploited.

"Question is whether that type of content is going to be compelling to drive an increasing amount of subscribers to sign up for the TV on mobile offerings."

For a start, mio TV on Mobile will be available on selected Nokia phones at a charge of S$6 a month, allowing users unlimited viewing of the available live channels. Additional charges will apply for Pay Per View channels and Video on Demand.
