SINGAPORE : Despite worries about rising costs, there was no stopping tech-savvy shoppers from visiting the annual PC Show that opened on Thursday.
Organisers said 176,000 people showed up at the Singapore Suntec Centre for the event's opening day, up 17 percent from last year.
First day sales were 75 percent higher than last year, at S$3.5 million.
Revenues are expected to nearly double to S$50 million this year, compared to last year's sales of S$26.2 million.
Laptop computers are one of the crowd's favourites at this year's PC show. Exhibitors said they are happy about the visitor turnout which was better than expected.
"The number of visitors coming to the PC Show this year is more than last year. And to date, our sales is 15 percent higher, compared to last year," said Wan Wai San, a marketing manager at Samsung Asia.
Organisers expect over 1 million people over the 4-day event, up from 907,000 a year ago. They also expect sales to nearly double compared to last year.
"Sales last year was more than S$26.2 million. This year, we are expecting the consumers to spend more; we're targeting at more than S$50 million in sales," said Gillian Loh, project manager at Lines Exposition & Management Services.
Organisers had to double the amount of exhibition space to accommodate a record 600 exhibitors compared to about 400 in 2007.
"I think it's a great event, to come here and shop for a bargain buy," said a member of the public who was at the PC Show.
Another said: "We did some market research first before we decided on buying." - CNA /ls
