SINGAPORE : German research company Bayer CropScience has opened a S$10 million rice research laboratory in Singapore.
It aims to develop new varieties of hybrid rice to improve crop yields in Asia, which produces 90 percent of the world's rice supply.
This comes at a time when a worldwide shortage is causing the price of rice to soar.
The new laboratory is said to be the first of its kind in Asia Pacific.
Bayer said it expects the laboratory to increase the breeding capacity of hybrid rice significantly.
Currently, Bayer produces conventional hybrid rice seed varieties that produce up to 35 percent higher crop yields than conventional rice varieties. - CNA/ms
