SINGAPORE: The American business community here in Asia is less optimistic on growth and expansion in 2008, according to a survey conducted by The American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore.

The survey reported concerns from American companies in Southeast Asian countries - including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam - over the increase in housing and office lease costs.

They also expressed worries about the state of the global economy, US economy and rising business costs.

Andrew Benbow, executive director of the American Chamber of Commerce, Singapore, said: "I think a lot of companies are involved in trade with Americans, so if there's a slowdown in trade and a slowdown in the market in US, that will affect our business here...

"I think that's part of the concern. And some of the knock-on of the financial system may affect liquidity."
