SINGAPORE: Singapore retailers are gearing up for the inaugural Singapore night race with special promotions and discounts.

While malls located along the race circuit may be closer to the crowds, those further away from the trackside may stand a better chance of racing off to bigger sales.

American-style restaurant Hooters believes its location at Clarke Quay, which is outside of the race circuit, is likely to draw more crowds who want to avoid the inconvenience of road blocks.

Marketing & business development manager of Hooters Singapore, Joey Leong, said: "I'm confident to achieve more than 20 per cent increase in our business because we are off the track, so we plan to attract not only foreign visitors, but also local residents to come down."

Another retailer at Clarke Quay, Royal Selangor Singapore, also expects to see a significant increase in sales.

Chairman of Royal Selangor Singapore, P S Yong, said: "We are looking for some 30 per cent increase in sales by offering a 10 per cent discount storewide in all locations."

Malls located along the race circuit are also rolling out aggressive promotional campaigns to woo shoppers who may be deterred by the road blocks and diversions.

Marina Square will extend operating hours to midnight on the three race days and various discounts will be offered to F1 ticket holders.

Although there are concerns that sales may be affected by the traffic controls in the area, retailers are optimistic that the race, which is expected to bring in some 50,000 overseas visitors, will be good for business.
