SINGAPORE: Data from Singapore's Department of Statistics showed that overall retail sales rose by 4.2 per cent in August year-on-year.

But the increase was 11.4 per cent after excluding the motor vehicles segment.

According to the latest figures, most retail segments saw higher sales compared to the same period last year.

Sales of telecommunications products and computers, petrol service stations, watches and jewellery, supermarkets, department stores, clothing and footwear all saw double-digit growth of between 11.2 per cent and 29.6 per cent.

Bucking the trend were sales of motor vehicles, which fell by 12.9 per cent, and recreational goods, which slipped 6.8 per cent over the previous year.

The volume of business among food caterers and restaurants also dipped by 1.8 per cent year-on-year. - CNA/vm
