SINGAPORE : Local rig-builder Keppel FELS is the overall winner at this year's MAXA awards which recognise manufacturing excellence.

This marks the first time a local company has taken the top spot at the awards since it was started in 2006.

The award is given to Singapore-based companies with world-class manufacturing standards.

These firms exemplify excellent innovation, successful operating systems and long-term sustainability.

A new award was also introduced this year to recognise firms with systematic processes in managing their impact on the environment.

The inaugural Excellence in Environmental Management award was given to GlaxoSmithKline for its comprehensive approach to energy and waste management.

Semiconductor foundry United Microelectronics received the Operational Excellence award, while Panasonic Factory Solutions won the Innovation award. - CNA/ms
