SINGAPORE: The number of containers handled by Singapore's ports continued to decline in October due to the global economic slowdown and flagging demand from major markets such as the United States and Europe.

According to data from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, local ports moved 2.52 million standard containers in October, down from 2.55 million in the previous month.

However, compared to a year ago, the figure was an increase of 5 per cent.

The growth rate of container volumes in Singapore has been falling from double digits in July to single digits in August, September and October, reflecting the adverse impact of the global economic slowdown.

In the first ten months of the year, major port operator PSA handled 24.65 million standard containers at its main Singapore Terminals, up 9.9 per cent over the same period in 2007.

Its smaller counterpart, Jurong Port, moved 81,000 standard containers in October, up 22.7 per cent on-year.
