SINGAPORE: Mr Lee Hsien Yang has been appointed chairman of the soon-to-be restructured Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore or CAAS.

The appointment by Transport Minister Raymond Lim takes effect from Thursday when CAAS will be restructured to focus on regulatory and strategic functions.

Mr Lee, who will remain as chairman of conglomerate Fraser & Neave, will be assisted by a 10-member board.

They include the managing director of LYK Aerospace, Lim Yeow Khee; Chief of Air Force, Major General Ng Chee Khern; and Mr Seng Han Thong, Assistant Secretary General of the NTUC.

The Transport Ministry said Mr Liew Mun Leong, who has served CAAS as its chairman since September 2005, will complete his term of office on Wednesday.

Four other board members will also be stepping down on July 1. They are Mr Mike Barclay, CEO of Sentosa Development Corporation; Mr Steven Lee Joo Kang, a deputy CEO at DHL; Mr Lee Liat Cheng, chairman and CEO of Anglo-French Travel Pte Ltd; and Mr Lim Kim Choon, outgoing CAAS director-general and CEO.
