SINGAPORE: Crowds lined up at telco SingTel's headquarters along Exeter Road for as long as four hours to get their hand's on Apple's latest offering - the iPhone 3GS.
Packed with features like GPS orientation, a video camera and twice the processing speed, it's easy to see why customers are eager to get their hands on them.
Taking cues from last year's launch of the first generation iPhone, SingTel had more to offer customers while they were in line.
Yuen Kuan Moon, executive VP, Consumer Group, SingTel, said: "On average, a customer during the peak period will queue between anywhere for three to four hours.
"So this time round, we have broken up the queue into three different sections. In each section, our customers will be entertained and kept informed of what is happening during the launch as well as to educate them on the latest features and functions of the phone."
SingTel estimated between 1,500 and 2,000 customers on Friday, with more expected over the next two days. The telco also said it has increased the number of counters by about 10 per cent to deal with the load.
SingTel even had preview sections for customers to give the new phone a whirl before getting one.
Hardcore Apple fans came as early as nine in the morning, including Jackson Low, who was the first in line for the iPhone 3GS.
He said: "I felt that I wanted to upgrade my phone, and I wanted to get it first. I wanted to get the best first, so I woke up earlier this year."
And first he definitely was to officially get the new iPhone 3GS. - CNA/vm
