SINGAPORE: Singapore Airlines (SIA) said Wednesday it would begin flying the world's biggest passenger plane, the Airbus A380, on its Melbourne route in late September.

Using the "superjumbo" on the Melbourne route will increase SIA's operating capacity to Australia's second biggest city by 10 per cent without the need for extra flights, the carrier said in a statement.

SIA currently operates three daily trips from Singapore to Melbourne and said the A380 would replace an existing Boeing 747-400 service.

SIA, the launch customer for the A380, started commercial services using the double-decker plane to Sydney in October 2007. The carrier later added London, Tokyo, Paris and Hong Kong to the list.

The giant plane can carry up to 853 passengers, but SIA has chosen a setup with a maximum 471 seats.

SIA said it currently has nine A380s in service with a firm order for another 10 and options for a further six.
