SINGAPORE : Singapore researchers have come up with a wheelchair that is controlled by brainwaves.

Researchers from the National University of Singapore and A*STAR say the wheelchair is very safe -- it is the first in the world to be tested successfully in real-life situations.

Electrodes attached to the user's head will transmit brainwaves to a computer that will then direct the wheelchair.

Although brain signals come in large amounts and may change quickly, this technology can differentiate and select the appropriate response.

At $5,000 more than a regular wheelchair, it may still be out of reach for many.

But researchers hope to bring down its price with refinements made to the technology.

Their research for the wheelchair also has other uses -- it can allow those with speech impediments to communicate through computers, or help the disabled play games. - CNA /ct
