SINGAPORE : Ribena drinks sold in Singapore have been certified "rich in Vitamin C" by the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA).
AVA said test results on the drinks showed that they meet the requirements under Singapore Food Regulations.
The regulations require 200ml of fruit juice drinks and cordials to contain at least 15 mg of Vitamin C before they can carry the claim "Rich in Vitamin C" claim.
And Ribena drinks made the mark.
The tests were conducted after Ribena drinks in New Zealand were found to contain almost no Vitamin C.
Ribena maker GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has been fined S$235 000 (NZ$217,500 or US$156,000) for misleading advertising.
The company had claimed that its blackcurrant drinks had four times the Vitamin C of oranges.
But a pair of 14-year-old schoolgirls exposed the false claim after testing the drink as part of a science project.
GSK said it did not deliberately set out to mislead consumers and blamed faulty testing methods.
The AVA said Ribena drinks in Singapore were not affected because those that are sold here are manufactured in Malaysia and the Philippines. - CNA/ms
