SINGAPORE: Singapore has assured UN special envoy Ibrahim Gambari that it will continue to do all it can to support his efforts to promote national reconciliation and a political solution in Myanmar.

The assurance came as officials from the Foreign Affairs Ministry met Mr Gambari at the Changi Airport while he was in transit enroute to New Delhi from Jakarta.

Mr Gambari is on a six-nation Asian consultation tour to find a peaceful solution to the Myanmar situation before returning to the military-ruled country next month.

In a statement, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said Singapore reiterated its concerns about the Myanmar situation and hoped the Myanmar authorities would extend their fullest cooperation to Mr Gambari by agreeing to his early return to Myanmar.

Singapore also hoped that Mr Gambari would be given access to the highest levels of Myanmar's State Peace and Development Council and the government as well as the widest possible range of contacts.

They include, in particular, opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, members of the opposition National League for Democracy, monks and members of the State Constitution Drafting Commission. - CNA/ir
