SINGAPORE : Teachers have welcomed the Education Ministry's announcement of better pay and career development for them.
Some also say it is a timely move.
The Singapore Teachers' Union says it is happy the government has taken a holistic approach towards making the teaching profession more attractive.
In a statement, it says, given the robust economic growth and stiff competition for talent, the overall remuneration package for teachers must stay competitive and keep pace with the private sector.
It's also hoped that one of the main gripes - a heavy workload - will lighten as more teachers are employed.
Chow Weisi, Teacher, Nanyang Girls' High School, says: "By introducing all the support staff, parent educators in the coming years to actually increase, strengthen the teaching force that would actually impact the teacher-student ratio and the class size of the schools, so that teachers can better manage and deliver more effective lessons."
As bonuses and pay increments become more merit-based, the evaluation process for teachers will become more important.
Many say they would leave the evaluation process to the ministry to ensure it is fair.
Sharul Hisham, Teacher, Yew Tee Primary School, says: "I have confidence that assessment will be very transparent as well as in a fair manner for all teachers."
The higher pay package will cost the Ministry S$380 million a year. - CNA/ch
